999 vs 916 Gold: What the Difference Is Worth

999 gold is 99.9% pure. 916 gold is 91.6% pure. That eight-point gap decides two things that matter to your money: what you get back when you sell, and whether you can wear it.

The numbers behind the names

The figures are parts per thousand. 999 means 999 parts gold out of 1,000. 916 means 916 parts out of 1,000, with the remaining 84 parts made up of other metals, usually copper and silver.

In karats, 24K is pure gold and 22K is 916. You will see both naming systems used interchangeably in Singapore, often in the same shop.

The alloy is not an adulteration or a trick. It is there for a reason, and the reason is hardness.

Why jewellery is not made from pure gold

Pure gold is soft. A 999 ring bends out of shape, scratches from ordinary wear, and loses detail on any engraved surface within months. It is a beautiful metal and a poor material for something you put on your hand every day.

Adding 8.4% of other metals changes that substantially. 916 holds a setting, keeps an edge, survives being knocked against a door frame. This is why 916 dominates gold jewellery across Singapore, Malaysia, India and much of the region, and why you will find it at Mustafa and throughout Little India.

So the honest summary is: 916 is better jewellery, 999 is better gold. They are optimised for different jobs.

What happens when you sell

Here is the part that catches people, and it catches them years later.

When you sell 999 bullion, you are selling a recognised product. A 100g 999.9 bar from an accredited refiner is priced off spot, because the buyer resells it as the same bar. The discount to spot is a normal dealer spread.

When you sell 916 jewellery, you are selling the gold content only. The buyer pays for 91.6% of the weight at the current gold price, minus a margin for testing and handling. What does not come back:

  • The workmanship or craftsmanship charge you paid
  • The shop's retail markup
  • Any design or brand premium

On a piece bought at retail, those can add up to a very large fraction of what you paid. This is not a dealer being unfair to you. It is that you bought a manufactured object and you are selling raw material.

A worked comparison

Take the same amount of money spent two ways.

999.9 gold bar 916 gold chain
Workmanship charge None Applies, often significant
Gold content 99.99% of weight 91.6% of weight
Priced off Live spot plus a stated premium Retail price set by the shop
On resale Spot less a dealer spread Gold content less handling
Can you wear it No Yes

Neither column is the right answer for everyone. If the purpose is to hold value, the left column wins on every financial line. If the purpose is to wear it, own it or give it, the right column is the only one that does the job.

The mistake is buying the right column while believing you are getting the left.

When 916 genuinely makes sense

  • You want to wear it
  • It is a gift, or for an occasion where the piece matters
  • You value the object rather than the metal
  • You are buying within a cultural or family tradition where the form is the point

All of these are perfectly good reasons. None of them are investment reasons, and it is worth being clear with yourself about which you are acting on.

When to buy 999

  • You are buying gold to hold value
  • You want to sell at a predictable relationship to spot
  • You want something any dealer worldwide will price without argument

If you already own 916

You have not made a mistake, and it is worth more than nothing. 916 jewellery has real gold content and a reasonable resale market in Singapore.

Two practical notes. Get more than one quote, because purity testing on jewellery varies more between buyers than it does on bullion. And ask for the rate per gram for 916 rather than a lump sum for the pile, so you can compare buyers properly.
