Where to Buy Silver Bars in Singapore
Share
Silver is the cheaper way into precious metals, and it behaves differently enough from gold that it is worth understanding before you buy rather than after.
Start with purity
Investment silver bars should be 99.9% pure or better. That is the figure to check first, and it is stamped on the bar as 999.
Beyond purity, look for a bar from a recognised refiner with its purity mark and refiner mark intact. A 999 bar from a recognised refiner meets that standard without you having to think about it. The pieces to be careful with are novelty items, unmarked poured bars, and anything sold on its design rather than its metal.
Silver premiums are higher, and that surprises people
The premium over spot on silver is a larger percentage than on gold, and there is a structural reason for it.
Refining, minting, packing and shipping cost roughly the same per bar regardless of whether that bar is gold or silver. But a silver bar holds far less value for the same handling effort. Spread the same fixed cost over a much smaller value and the percentage lands harder.
This is also why the size effect is more pronounced with silver than with gold. Moving from a 1 oz silver bar up to a 100g or 10 oz bar cuts the premium noticeably. If you are buying silver as a store of value rather than for flexibility, size up.
Ask for the silver premium as a percentage over spot before you buy, and ask it of more than one dealer. Silver premiums vary more between sellers than gold premiums do, so the comparison is worth the five minutes.
Storage is a real cost, not a footnote
This is the thing gold buyers underestimate when they move into silver.
At current ratios, the same money buys something in the order of eighty times the weight in silver as in gold. A holding that fits in an envelope as gold fills a small safe as silver.
That has consequences: home storage gets impractical faster, insured storage costs are charged by volume and weight, and moving the position around is genuinely heavy. None of this is an argument against silver. It is an argument for deciding where it is going to live before you buy it, rather than after it arrives.
Bars or coins?
Coins carry a higher premium than bars of the same weight. What you get for it is easier authentication, because a government mint's product is more recognisable than a generic bar, and easier resale in small amounts. Bars give you more silver per dollar. Neither is wrong.
Where to buy in Singapore
Four routes, with the trade-offs that come with each.
Bullion dealers. Priced off live spot with a stated premium, and the ones worth using publish buyback rates too. This is the route that treats silver as bullion rather than as an afterthought.
Banks. Some offer precious metals products, though often as accounts rather than physical metal you can collect. Worth checking what you would actually be holding.
Online marketplaces. Cheapest headline prices, highest counterfeit risk, and you are on your own for authentication. Silver is counterfeited more than people assume, precisely because the per-piece value is low enough that nobody bothers testing.
Jewellers and pawnshops. Generally not set up for silver bullion, and pricing reflects that.
The question to ask before you hand over money
Ask what the dealer will pay you for the same bar today.
The premium you pay is visible. The buyback rate is not, and it is where the real cost of the round trip sits. This matters more for silver than for gold, because silver's spread is wider in percentage terms and because fewer buyers in Singapore deal in silver seriously. A dealer who publishes their silver buyback rates is telling you something useful. One who will not quote until you turn up with metal is telling you something too.
A short checklist
- Confirm the bar is 999 or better, and that the purity mark is on it
- Confirm the refiner is accredited
- Ask for the premium as a percentage over spot
- Ask for the buyback rate on the same item today
- Work out where you are going to store it before you buy
