PAMP vs Valcambi vs Metalor vs Heraeus

Short answer: less than the marketing suggests, but not nothing, and the part that matters is not the part most people focus on.

All four are LBMA-accredited refiners producing 999.9 fine gold. The gold in a PAMP bar and the gold in a Metalor bar of the same weight is the same gold. Where they differ is packaging, authentication, brand recognition, and therefore premium and ease of resale.

The thing that actually matters: LBMA accreditation

Before comparing brands, understand the line that genuinely divides the market.

The London Bullion Market Association maintains a Good Delivery List of accredited refiners. A bar from a refiner on that list is accepted by dealers worldwide without being re-assayed. A bar from a refiner not on it may be perfectly good gold, but a buyer has to satisfy themselves about that, and you usually pay for their uncertainty through a lower price.

PAMP, Valcambi, Metalor, Heraeus and Argor-Heraeus are all accredited. If you are choosing among these, you have already cleared the bar that matters most. Everything below this point is a smaller decision than the one you have already made.

How they compare

Refiner Base Known for Typical premium
PAMP Suisse Switzerland The Lady Fortuna design, CertiPAMP sealed assay cards, Veriscan authentication Highest
Valcambi Switzerland CertiCard packaging, and the CombiBar, a sheet of small bars you can snap apart Moderate to high
Argor-Heraeus Switzerland CertiCard assay packaging with serial matching the bar Moderate
Heraeus Germany Clean, plain presentation, strong industrial reputation Moderate, often the value pick
Metalor Switzerland Tamper-evident assay cards, long-established Swiss refiner Moderate, often the value pick

PAMP: the brand premium, and what you get for it

PAMP is the most recognised bullion brand in Asia, and its bars carry the highest premium of the group. Two things justify part of that.

The first is Veriscan. PAMP records the microscopic surface pattern of each bar, which is effectively a fingerprint, and stores it. You can verify a bar against PAMP's own database rather than relying on the packaging. That is real anti-counterfeit value, and it is the single best authentication system in retail bullion.

The second is liquidity by familiarity. A PAMP bar is recognised by every dealer and most buyers in the region. That does not raise its resale price at a serious dealer, who prices off spot regardless, but it makes a private sale easier.

The rest of the premium is brand and the Lady Fortuna design. You are entitled to want that. Just be clear it is an aesthetic purchase, not a financial one.

Valcambi: the CombiBar is the genuinely different thing

Valcambi's standard bars are comparable to the rest of the group. What makes Valcambi worth knowing is the CombiBar: a single bar scored into small divisible sections, typically 1g each, that you can break off individually.

The appeal is obvious. You get closer to the premium of a large bar while retaining the ability to liquidate in small amounts. The trade-off is that a broken-off segment has lost its packaging context, so it is harder to resell at a good price than an intact small bar.

It is a niche product that suits a specific worry. If that worry is yours, nothing else in the group does it.

Metalor and Heraeus: where the value usually sits

Both are long-established, both are LBMA-accredited, both produce excellent 999.9 bars, and both typically carry a lower premium than PAMP for the same weight of the same metal.

If you are buying gold to hold value, this is where the arithmetic points. You are paying less to acquire the same quantity of the same metal from a refiner any dealer will accept. Over several purchases the difference compounds.

Metalor is Swiss and supplies both investment and industrial markets. Heraeus is German with a substantial industrial precious metals business behind it. Neither has PAMP's consumer brand recognition in Asia. Neither needs it.

So how should you choose?

Work down this list in order.

  1. Is the refiner LBMA-accredited? If not, stop. Nothing else compensates.
  2. Is the assay card intact and does the serial match the bar? This matters more than which of the four names is printed on it.
  3. What is the premium over spot? If two accredited bars of the same weight differ in premium, you are paying for brand, not gold.
  4. Do you specifically want Veriscan? If authentication worries you, PAMP is worth the difference. If it does not, it is not.
  5. Do you need divisibility? That points at Valcambi CombiBar and nothing else.

What matters far more than the brand

Two things outrank this entire comparison.

Keep the packaging intact. A sealed bar with a matching serial and an undamaged assay card is the easiest thing in the market to resell. Breaking a bar out of its card to look at it can cost you more than the brand difference you spent time agonising over.

Check the buyback rate before you buy. The premium you pay is visible. The rate you get back is not, and it is where the real cost of the round trip sits. A dealer who publishes buyback rates is telling you something a dealer who quotes on the day is not.
